Biography

Dr. Boden started practicing at Emory in 1992. During his spine fellowship at Case Western Reserve Hospital in Cleveland, Dr. Boden trained with one of the founding fathers of modern spine surgery, Dr. Henry Bohlman. A primary original researcher on bone growth factor development and spine fusion technology, Dr. Boden is also an internationally renowned lecturer and teacher and the driving force behind the Emory Orthopedics and Spine Hospital (EUOSH).  He has received numerous research grants, research awards, is consistently named as one of America’s Top Doctors, and was recently designated as one of the 100 Top Spine Surgeons in the U.S. (Beckers).

Research

Dr. Boden’s research has three primary areas. The first is cell/molecular biology of osteoblast differentiation including study of the mechanism of action of bone growth factors (BMPs).  This research also involves local and regional gene therapy to regenerate bone.  This research has evolved into the design and development of small drug-like molecules that will enhance bone formation locally, regionally, and possibly systemically.  The second focus is a variety of animal models of spine fusion to understand the biology of the healing process and test the efficacy of various bone graft substitutes.  The third focus is that of clinical outcomes research relating to spinal disorders, diagnostic imaging, and utilization of health care resources.
